ABOUT THE SKY PROJECT

Part of the human condition is loss. Loss is defined as the “fact or process of losing something or someone.” Examples fill language and are found in terms like: Loss of Innocence, loss of dignity, loss of hope, loss of virginity, loss of freedom, loss of identity, loss of memory, and the ultimate loss—the loss of life itself.

With the loss of human life, it is often imagined the deceased ascend to some higher place or position above and beyond the earthly realm. When seeking answers or some resolve related to loss, many direct their “why’s” while looking to someplace above--the sky--while others may pose questions through metaphorical expression referencing the sky in some manner.

While material vestiges of loss may display themselves in the images I make, they are not the primary focus. Instead, I use photography (sometimes in associations with other media) as a means to encourage reflection on what is missing. The photographs by themselves may act as points of departure through which the mind can travel; a place for meditation which may deliver deeper insight into what is no longer. When the photographs are coupled or associated with other media, they act as touchstones or markers. These presentations are intended as points of departure where media links (provided with QR codes linked to web info), or some artifact or object curated alongside it, allows access to additional information that may direct the viewer to a place of enhanced understanding. Whether the photographs are presented alone or grouped with other items, their presentation flexibility allow them to be accessed in a gallery space as easily as they are repackage into a book or some other form.
